Propel® SINUS STENTS: PROPELLING NEW WAYS TO LASTING SINUS RELIEF FOR CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Propel® sinus implants offer patients advanced, lasting chronic sinusitis relief, better sinus surgery experience and outcomes.

A new generation of sinus stents, including the PROPEL family of dissolvable drug-eluting sinus stents, make treating the source of chronic sinusitis symptoms easier and more effective.

The result is improved surgical outcomes, reducing the need for additional surgical procedures and for systemic steroids, which can have significant side effects.

PROPEL sinus implants provide localized, controlled drug delivery directly to the sinus tissue. The PROPEL implant works by opening the sinus airway. It is a small coiled, or spring-like device that works to hold the airway open following a surgical procedure.

The implant is gently inserted to maintain the surgical opening and gradually deliver an advanced corticosteroid with inflammatory properties directly to the sinus lining as the implant slowly dissolves.

Once inserted, the PROPEL stent slowly releases a steroid mometasone to reduce inflammation during the healing process of sinus surgery. This helps to maintain more consistently open sinuses and faster healing. The steroid is absorbed into the surrounding tissue and will be present for 90 days following placement. The stent itself will dissolve after two to four weeks.

When a patient’s chronic sinusitis does not respond to medications, surgery to enlarge the opening to drain the sinuses may provide the best option. The PROPEL family of sinus stents offers a new weapon in the fight against chronic sinusitis, backed by clinical data and positive outcomes.

Sinus surgery is often used to alleviate symptoms related to chronic sinusitis. Symptoms can feel like a never-ending cold and can include congestion, decreased sense of smell, facial pain or pressure, and persistent post-nasal drip. There are now several different types of PROPEL implants that may be used in different sinus cavities that are most commonly effected.  Newer indications are now allowing some patients to receive treatment with the implant in the office setting under local anesthesia.

Thanks to continuing technological advances, sinus surgery today is easier, and less invasive than ever before. Sinus surgery using a PROPEL implant could be your game-changer, offering advanced sinus relief, and a more comfortable procedure and recovery.

How Does PROPEL Provide Relief from Chronic Sinusitis?

While minimally invasive sinusitis surgery is one of the most effective treatments for chronic sinusitis, the chronic nature of the condition, ongoing inflammation and scarring, can threaten to block sinuses again. PROPEL can help decrease inflammation for longer-term relief, as it treats inflammation where it happens.

How do PROPEL Sinus Stents Work?

The PROPEL sinus stent is uniquely effective because it is designed to work in a multi-faceted approach and stages, as follows:

Opens. It props open the sinus after surgery. This allows air to circulate and mucus to drain, so proper sinus functioning and healing can take place.

Delivers. The PROPEL sinus stent contains an anti-inflammatory medication. It delivers the drug in a controlled manner, directly into the healing sinus tissues that need it. This helps to decrease inflammation (swelling), and prevent scarring.

Dissolves. As PROPEL sinus stent delivers the medication, it slowly dissolves. This takes about 30 to 45 days. It can be left to dissolve or be removed at any time.

Maintains. The PROPEL sinus stent is clinically proven to maintain the outcomes of surgery. This means less likelihood for additional surgical interventions or the need for oral steroids.

Eases. The PROPEL sinus stent is lightweight, and usually cannot be felt once in place. And, its unique dissolvable design eliminates the need for removal, for additional peace of mind.

What are the Risks Involved?

These products are not intended for people who are allergic to the drug (mometasone furoate) or to certain polymers. Risks may include pain/pressure, movement of the implant (within or out of the sinus) and possible side effects of the drug. The most common side effects in clinical studies were an infection, headache and nose bleed. For more information on the risks and benefits of PROPEL, please talk to your doctor.

Is PROPEL Safe?

PROPEL’s safety and efficacy is backed by the highest-level of clinical evidence. Over 100,000 people have been treated with PROPEL. Clinical evidence also specifically supports the safety, effectiveness, and clinical utility of this implant for use in chronic rhinosinusitis (or chronic sinusitis) patients. PROPEL was further associated with favorable rates for maintaining the sinus opening, reduced inflammation, and delivering medication with less side-effects. The PROPEL sinus implant was first introduced in 2011, and is FDA approved.
